What is safecracking? Defined by Wikipedia Safecracking is the process of opening a safe without either the combination or key. Different procedures are needed to open the many different types of safes in use today. Expert safecrackers are aware of the differences so they can quickly identify the most suitable method to use with each type of safe.

Ok there are a few things you can do if you want to try opening a locked safe and then if all that fails then it probably is time to “call the cavalry” or just get an experienced safe-cracker. Here are a few facts to keep in mind when faced with the prospect of a locked safe.

Guessing the combination 

Many safes are sold with a manufacturer-set combination and often users just keep these rather than creating a new combination. Happily there are sources that list these combination codes (aka try-out combinations) by manufacturer. ***The try-out combinations for most safes are an industry standard and usually known by both locksmiths and safecrackers.**

Lock manipulation

Ok not as easy as it looks in the movies, but some combination padlocks can be manipulated by pulling or applying leverage to the shackle whilst simultaneously turning every dial to find the combination needed to unlock that padlock. As for safes, lock manipulation where possible is our method of choice as it means there will be no damage to the safe and so no repairs will be required. However with the advance in lock making technology this can be time consuming and  despite the number of tools available to help manipulate a lock is an art that will require a master locksmith.

All the other methods listed above will damage the safe and should be left to an expert safecracker (safe engineer).
